Life of a Hero

hero-icon1
These assemblies bring alive some of the stories in David’s life history, with a comic book style …shepherd, friend, song writer, soldier etc. His life was full of action and drama, similar to that found in comics – just with less Lycra and capes!  Children are all into their heroes, so we can grab their attention quite easily.

The series is designed to fit with the SEAL summer term themes.  Most assemblies are relevant to both Key Stage 1 (Infant) and Key Stage 2 (Junior). In some cases there are particular suggestions for each key stage.

Visual aids: A template chart is included, so you can make a basic David face (possibly enlarge to A3), laminate it, and add changeable additions – hair, expressions etc. Cartoon style speech bubbles are also included. You can type words to place in them, or laminate and use a dry wipe pen. Use these with stories and drama to create a comic book presentation style. Use simple props for characters, e.g. a headscarf to turn a pupil into a woman.

Pupils' Response: Schools are encouraged to give opportunity for children to ‘respond to the worship offered', but this needs to be done sensitively, taking into account the backgrounds of the audience. It is a good idea to provide a variety of responses, including audible or visual focal points. If a prayer is used, provide opportunity for children to opt into or out of the prayer, as suggested in these assemblies.

Some assemblies incluse part of a Psalm of David. He wrote many of the Psalms and they deal with situations in these stories. You could use the Psalms as a time of reflection read to music.
