Spin-off Assemblies

Introduction

The most recent advice given by the government has been that an act of worship "need not contain only Christian material". It must, however, contain some elements "which relate specifically to the traditions of Christian belief and which accord a special status to Jesus Christ".

This statement will probably go down as being the most hotly contested yet completely vague piece of legislation ever to land on the doorstep of each school. It defies definition, and from whatever viewpoint one stands, others will take objection.

This set of assemblies devised by Spinnaker Trust look at this 'special status accorded to Jesus'. We are not just looking at stories, neither are we looking at what Christians necessarily believe today, but rather seeking to answer the question 'what was so special about him?' Predictably this investigation is bound to raise the supplementary question which entitles this terms assemblies, 'what is so special about Jesus'. In other words, Christians believe it is what he said and did that makes him who he is today.

To give our series some bible based foundation most of the stories and accounts we refer to come from John's gospel.

Aims and objectives of the programme

  1. Introduce the children to John's account of the life of Jesus.
  2. A consideration of his attitudes, actions and message.
  3. To foster a sense of wonder and awe at the historical significance of the life of Jesus
  4. To encourage the children to challenge some general notions of the life of Jesus.
  5. To elicit a suitable response from the children for each assembly.

All these assemblies are stored in .PDF format and can be viewed, printed or downloaded with Acrobat Reader. If you don't have Acrobat Reader on your PC, you may find it on a software or driver CD-ROM. Alternatively you can download it free of charge from the Adobe web site.

Series Outline

Assembly

Theme

1. Name dropping We all love meeting or seeing famous people. In fact, we look forward to a chance to compare famous people we have met? Would we boast of meeting Jesus? What did people think about him?
2. Impossible! Probably the most ‘infamous’ thing Jesus became know for was doing impossible things. But sometimes the onlookers found it hard to understand. In fact, they were probably jealous. Are we jealous of other people’s success? We can find out a bit about ourselves as we look at the story of the man born blind and healed and the ensuing debate?
3. Changes! Why on earth did Jesus change water into wine for his first miracle?
4. More than meets the eye There is more to life that what we see with our eyes, particularly with people, and especially with Jesus.
5A. Weather forecast Weather symbols are a neat way of discovering what the weather will be tomorrow. Would the disciples have gone fishing if there had been a weather forecast telling them of severe storms on the Sea of Galilee? In the end their question "Who is this?" illustrates their own misunderstanding of the man Jesus.
5B. There must be a catch in it! Jesus calls Peter into service by helping him catch a miraculous catch of fish.
6. Airfix kits All the pieces of an Airfix kit are numbered. Some times you have to select bits if you are making a particular version. Lets look at the bits that might make up a ‘model’ of Jesus? As grown ups, we often talk about role models - perhaps this will explain what we mean!
7. I get so angry! Jesus got angry. Quite a bit I suspect, but there is one occasion when it is recorded in glorious Technicolor! He visited the temple and really let rip! Corrie ten Boom
8. Breaking the chains Near to where Martin lives is a large old oak tree called the Wilberforce Oak. Who sat there and why is it famous? A woman from Samaria became famous when Jesus met her since her ‘chains’ also came off!
9. Pass me that brick! I could not imagine throwing this brick at anyone. Doesn’t bear thinking about. In the times of Jesus this is the way they would punish people! Doesn’t seem that fair to me!
10. Smelly feet! Jesus, for all his fame, power and greatness, did not think himself too great to be caring for his friends by washing their feet!
