Spin-off Assemblies

Series Outline

So often in schools, at home, on the television we hear people saying “That's rubbish” or words to that effect. We often see people being put down, rejected and treated like rubbish. This series of assemblies explores some of these issues and how we can deal with things and people that others see as rubbish.

We discover that Jesus, was himself rejected and treated as ‘rubbish' by the people of the time. However, many people did believe in Jesus and went to look for him. Some went for hope, others went to ask questions. In these assemblies we will be looking at the stories of some of these people, such as Nicodemus, the ‘mad' Gadarene, and the ten lepers.

An important aspect of the theme will be the quality of ‘access' the material provides. In the same way that Jesus was as accessible, so too we want both the introductions, and the stories and analogies to be accessible to children of all primary ages and, especially this term, those who are of lower ability, for whom sometimes the more complex ideas are lost.

Many of the assemblies are built around bins. It is useful for the audience to see a real bin in the assemblies. Ideally a new bin should be bought for the purpose. That way you can safely put objects inside without worrying about health issues. An alternative for those wishing to travel lightly is a strong black bin liner.

It is hoped that this theme will perhaps present a learning opportunity for the whole school to appreciate each child in the community, accepting that none are ‘rubbish'.

Assembly

Theme

1. This is a rubbish assembly! What things are important about Christianity that sometimes ignored.
2. An old ticket Sometimes we lose a ‘return ticket’ a bit like losing the opportunity to apologise.
3. Old photographs We never throw away photographs of old friends and family, yet Jesus was rejected by many people.
4. Enough is enough! Plenty of people hoard a lot of old bits and pieces, but there comes a time when we have to take action and get rid of unwanted things! Jesus took action like this when he visited the temple.
5. Thrown away people There are many people in our world who are ‘thrown away’ and not wanted. For example, people who have diseases.
6. Mad Mob! There are many people in our world who are ‘thrown away’ and not wanted. For example, those with special needs.
7. I’m better than him! We are all guilty at sometime or other of ‘looking down’ on others. Jesus told us not to.
8. Autumn Leaves There are times when each of us loses someone special.
9. Christmas assembly If Jesus were born today, would he be ‘out the back’ with the bins?
