Doors |
Doors represent so many things - an opportunity, security, welcome, or rejection when slammed in the face. A door like 10 Downing Street represents privilege and status. The word ‘door' can also suggest urgency – the problem is right at your door!
What's behind a door? Who can open it? Who has the key? These ideas can seed the imagination. Children's fiction often uses the idea of a door (a wardrobe door or a gate to a secret garden – the principle is the same).
The analogy of a door is used in the Bible. Representing opportunity and future, Jesus suggested that life's answers are found by coming to His door, which opens to anyone who knocks.
In a time of heightened security and fear, it is tempting to retreat behind closed doors. It is good to reassure children that there is not a threat behind every door, and that some doors lead to caring, considerate yet different cultures. We can encourage them to believe that the future holds many great opportunities for all of us. Christians believe that God, in His love, prepares and shapes their future, so too their faith in God should also shape their optimism and contentment.
